My kids are so destructive. Photo frames and photo albums I have had since Boobie was a baby have since been broken to pieces or ripped apart. Some more than 8 years old, now no longer exist or are tattered and mangled.
Books I got Princess have been trashed due to her nonchalant, care less attitude towards them. Plants have felt both of my kids' wrath... just the other day, Fatty grabbed a stem of one of my house plants, leaving it broken and sad. I never had this much trouble with Boobie destroying things. Almost everything fragile was kept out of his reach and we didn't have houseplants when he was a baby (of course it was easier back then since we shared a room.... now we have a whole house).
These two new additions to the family like destruction. A pair of crocs Princess had since she learned to walk were Fatty's latest victims. He decided he would take a bite out of the decorative sun on the shoes, biting it all the way off. And to follow suit, Princess thought it would be helpful if she ripped off a piece of both butterflies on each shoe. Many hopes I had for passing down certain items are now dashed due to Fatty and Princess.
A careful and watchful eye needs to be on them at all times or else who knows what else they might destroy. They are kind of like puppies... VERY cute and lovable but not yet housebroken. LOL.

Day 12
Well we were doing so well, and today Princess finally had her first accident. It has been 6 days accident free.... well, 5 and a half.
All day, she went accident free. She's been doing so well these last few days, even on outings; using the toilet like a big girl, saying when she has to pee. Even staying dry for hours.
I guess the temptation was too strong and she finally let loose in her diaper, and near bedtime no less.
I literally put her on the potty a good 5 minutes before and then switched over to diapers, getting ready for bedtime (we're still working on night time potty training). I went out to the living room for a second while she played in the office. As I stepped in the office, the foul scent hit my nose and my heart dropped. I had just changed the baby so I new it was Princess. I couldn't believe after all the progress we had made, she stood there and pooped in her diaper. I know accidents happen, but that's no 'accident'.
After I changed her poop, I put her in time out. You might not agree with this, but she knows how to use the potty; she can talk! And she hates time out. It's the only way to teach her NOT to poop or pee on herself and for the message to come across loud and clear... she's a big girl now ans should use the potty like one.
Back to basics tomorrow I guess. It's like starting all over again after each and every 'accident'. Ugh!
P.S... I had a talk with her. And with what she can comprehend, I tried to make it clear that pee and poop needs to be deposited in the potty... not her diaper or underwear. I know she understands.. she is VERY smart. One tiny set back. We'll start fresh tomorrow. I still have my hopes on a diaper free Princess by Christmas.

Small Sizes... Does It Matter ?
You know, my little Princess has small, dainty feet. I consider them small anyway, in correlation to her height, since she's supposedly 'tall' for her age (and thin... she got them good genes).
Anyway, looking at her feet reminded me of all my years in school when I use to wish for smaller feet. I always thought I had big feet, when in retrospect, I had 'normal' sized feet for my height. Not too big and not too small. But I was busy eye-ing up the shorter girls with their tiny little dainty looking feet... feet that made every pair of shoe they wore look so much better on them. Plus, shoes in smaller sizes tend to look so much cuter than their bigger sized counterparts. Look at wedges in a size 6 and then compare it to a size 9... huh? I'm right aren't I?
I can laugh at wanting smaller feet now. For years I was a size 7 (6.5 in some shoes). I finally realized just how lucky I was... most of my friends were a size 8, pushing 9 and even 10. Yeah, among them, I was the one with dainty little feet. Once I was able to curb my foot obsession and get it under some kind of control, another size issue presented itself. The older I got, the more fascinated I became with boobs. My own and other people's. I noticed the difference and I realized that I just didn't stack up with some of the other girls. Even to this day, I still compare myself to other ample chested women and my inner green monster feels inadequate.
When I was in middle school, a class mate pointed out the fact of my too small chest, that I barely had boobs to suck on... where as, another classmate of mine was about triple in size compared to me. Next to her, with her double D knockers, I looked like a boy. I felt self conscious from that day on, but it didn't really bother me too much to scar me for life. I had to tell myself that one day I would grow (I read the book 'Are you there God, it's me Margaret' by Judy Bloom). Besides, my well endowed classmate was about 2 times my size (in body) so I brushed it off. Once I got a little older, the boobs would come.
If you've read my other blog post about this breast issue, you'll know that the boobs never, in fact, 'came'. But I wonder, what is my obsession with size. Does size really matter? Well, for me, I guess it does.
After 3 kids, my feet went up a whole size. Just about all my size 7's are a touch too tight. The new shoes Hubby bought me for my birthday are a size 8, and so are the sandals I bought for myself a few weeks back. Yes, I want my dainty perfect size 7 (sometimes 6.5) feet back.
As for the boob issue... I am so obsessed with my size I have begun stuffing my bra... something pre-teen girls do. I am a grown woman who stuffs her bra so I can look fuller up top and not so smallish. Yes, insert a *snicker* here.
I remember too, when my height was even an issue (and somewhat still is). Though unlike most girls who wished to be taller and supermodel like, I wished I was shorter, and more pixie like (you know, to go with my wishful smaller, more dainty looking feet.) I have 'average sized girl' syndrome... something I think I acquired being surrounded by so many short people in school.... and am surrounded by still in Costa Rica. I am 5 feet almost 4 inches... average but tall compared to the 5 ft nothing girls I come across.
So do I have a size issue... you bet your ass I do. But I have to say... as a mother, I am more content with what my body can do than what it looks like (for the most part).
So I have a size issue and since I can't do anything about the size of my feet, my height or my boobs, I don't let it consume me. Instead I focus on the sizes I can change... the growing size of my massive thighs, my huge ass and ever expanding stomach. Yeah, those need to shrink smaller in size and I have started to so something about it... it's called exercise and it works wonders.
Instead of obsessing about the sizes I can't change, I've turned my (positive) attention to the sizes that I can. Here's to a size 5 pair of jeans by next summer. Now at least that's not wishful thinking. And at least that's a size I can live with.

Clean Up Your Act
I am surrounded by such beauty living in Costa Rica, a naturally green country. But it's hard to notice all the beauty when I am also surrounded by so much filth, grime and pollution.
There are black waves of smoke emitted from buses, trucks, cars and vans daily... I literally have to cover my nose and mouth as they sometimes pass me by to stop myself from breathing in the toxins.
There is graffiti everywhere, and some of it ain't that pretty... fugly writings on church buildings and private properties. Old and dilapidated buildings that need care; houses so old they're falling to pieces. And dog shit every where you step! Not to mention the trash on the side of the roads and in rivers, piled up almost 2 stories high. In such a beautiful, green and natural country, why are the people so nasty?
Clean up after your dog shit. Please! I wish Costa Rica would institute a new law dictating that owners must clean up after their dogs take a dump on the streets. Please don't leave it for me or my kids to step in. I've been a victim of dog shit one too many times, on my shoe or my stroller wheel. It's a pain in the ass to wipe off. I can't look 2 feet in any direction without seeing dog poop, and it's not only disgusting, it's distasteful. Take pride in your town and your country and clean it up!
Get your cars, trucks, vans and buses checked with an emissions tests. According to Wikipedia.com: Automobile emissions control is the study and practice of reducing the polluting emissions produced by automobiles. That black smoke can't be healthy for the environment or for the people. It should be illegal to drive around emitting all that toxic smoke in the air, yet people still do it, buses being the biggest polluters of all. Change your filters, clean up your engines and drive healthier.
Graffiti is nice, when done well. And if you have permission, have at it. But don't go around writing and defacing public or private property just for the hell of it. A nice mural is fine, paintings and pictures and positive words that uplift are A -OK. But dammit, TLC has already been passed, stopped writing about it on other peoples walls and buildings. And stop with the derogatory remarks towards other people and races. Give it a rest already and clean up the negativity.
Old houses that are in need of repair need to be repaired. I understand if the funds aren't there for an individual but what about government buildings that are just an eye- sore to look at. Find it in your budget to get these buildings some much needed TLC. And if you can find it in your budget and your hearts to help out those people who need help fixing their homes, help! Costa Rica shouldn't be littered with ragged Ann looking houses, held together with zinc and scotch tape. It doesn't take much (time or money) to help build a nice one room HOUSE; not a shack. Slap some fresh paint on those hap-hazard looking buildings and ask for volunteers to make them look beautiful.
And as for the trash 'issue'... people are just down right lazy and nasty! There are trash 'baskets' practically everywhere... almost every house has an iron-made trash receptacle out front on the sidewalks to put their trash in; no need to have so much of it on the sides of streets and in the gutters.
Rivers are meant for rocks and water, not old rubber boots and barbie dolls. Trash piled high on the side of the road should be carted away ASAP... there are trash days (twice a day where I live) and a HUGE garbage truck for this purpose. Don't be lazy, clean it up! Do you want a country filled with filth or a country that is clean and beautiful.
I just about cried when I went to visit a river near San Carlos, only to find just above this beautifully clean wonder of mother nature, a pile of trash that included not just food wastes but household wastes as well, clothes, shoes and the like. Why would you do that to your town, your country! Why not go that extra mile and keep your surroundings clean? Take the time to care... organize clean up days. If you want to be proud of where you live, you have to want to make sure where you live is taken care of. The parks are in need of up-keep (although more than just trash pick up, they need to be repaired in a bad way...but that's another post). Kids deserve to grow up in an area filled with love, from caring neighbors who spent the time to keep it clean.
There is no need for me to walk around and only focus on the negative, yet it's hard not to when you see how very little some people care about their environment.
Please, people, take some time and CLEAN IT UP! We all deserve so much better.

Not Again Costa Rica
News as heard from a second hand source, my mother in law:
Yesterday morning, a bridge collapsed in Orotina with a bus carrying over 30 people. Six people died, according to channel 7 news yesterday around 1 pm (not sure if the death count has gone up since that time.)
Now, I don't watch or listen to much Costa Rican news, it's too depressing. However, I tend to get my news second hand from my in laws, who watch enough of that depressing stuff for all of us (even back in the states, watching my local 10 o clock news left me feeling sad, so I only limited my intake of news to one channel, once a day).
While the news is informative, the latest report and death toll really pissed me off. Now, according to my mother in law, the Costa Rican government KNEW that the bridges (and that's ALL BRIDGES) were bad and in dire need of repair or of being rebuilt). But oh no, guess what? When it comes to Costa Rica and their people's safety, the government wants to cry broke. According to them, the money isn't there to fix the bridges. So guess, what, they'll just let people die in the process until they reluctantly come to their senses and fix the damn bridges.
If you've ever been to Costa Rica or you live here, you know just how scary some of these bridges are. Some are so old and rickety, they sway back and forth while you drive over them, appearing as if they could buckle at any moment. Some are so small only one vehicle can pass at a time. And some are so terribly built, they have holes in every part of their structure. Have you ever seen a bridge so old and built out of rotting wood that was a main bridge used daily by cars, trucks and buses? A bridge in such disrepair, yet it's the only way from point A to point B, it makes you want to piss your pants every time you cross it. Well, welcome to Costa Rica. Shame, Shame Shame on you!!!
I don't know the inner workings of the Costa Rican government (I'll be the first to admit this). But from my understanding and from the outside looking in, how can they not have the money to repair the bridges when people's lives are at stake?
They are building a brand new highway that I am sure is costing millions of dollars. While the new highway (thanks to the information from a fellow CR blogger) is needed, I am sure it's not a life or death situation. Fixing the bridges are.
Those poor people on that bus yesterday, going about their every day life, not even thinking for a second that that day would be their last. Riding a bus that I myself could have been on, only to find themselves in that predicament. Granted, the bus usually lets people off and then allow them to board again once it has safely crossed the bridge. But it doesn't matter why, of all days, the driver crossed the bridge full of passengers on that day. If the bridge is bad, it would have collapsed either way, with or without the people on board.
It doesn't matter what the government wants to say (one theory being put out there is that the bus was overcrowded with under 40 people, when generally speaking a bus can carry a load much larger than that). The blame falls where it needs to, squarely on the government's shoulders. They know the bridges are bad, and yet let people drive over them on a daily basis. Yes, it's the government's fault, plain and simple.
Are there no funds at all, you're telling me Costa Rica. You would rather have a mounting death toll than fix the problem? It might not be easy, but it sure as hell is important.
I am shocked by the cavalier attitude the Costa Rican government is taking, like so many other governments around the world. They just don't give a F U C K! And that is what it boils down to.
The Japanese or the Chinese is funding the construction of a brand new and beautiful stadium in Costa Rica (right there in Sabana). It's a gift. Why not ask them to help fund the reconstruction of bridges instead.... wouldn't that be an even better gift to Costa Rican's everywhere? Do we really need a new stadium at this stage when the bridges should take precedent. Is the government so ignorant as to not think this?
It just boils my blood because Costa Rica is filled with hard working people who don't deserve this kind of treatment (no one in any country should be treated like this). They deserve better, as do we all.
People need to travel to and from their homes and work places and across bridges... how are they supposed to feel knowing that at any moment it could be their lives hanging in the balance because their government ceases to care. It could have been any one of us on that bus. Or it could have been a car full of kids or a family van with babies in the back seat. Why let things get this far before doing something. Why do people always have to die for governments to realize that it is their job to take care of their people.
So Costa Rica, listen up... find the damn money to fix the damn bridges. Or I pray and hope that if you don't, you'll have a revolution on your hands. In a peaceful country such as this, how do you think you'll look to the world and your American buddy if your people are in turmoil? Listen up, take notice and start to give a shit.

Something To Tempt Your Tastebuds
South of the Border chicken (Pan fried garlic and herb chicken with mixed veggies... onions, red peppers, green beans, corn and tomatoes) and rice and black beans.
I LOVE to cook. And these two dishes are just the tip of the iceberg of what I can do. And I never follow recipes, just loosely sometimes. The only time I follow a recipe to a T is when I bake, which is basically uncharted territory for me, unless you count my banana bread, which I know how to bake with my eyes closed.
But I just love to cook... and I guess that's a good thing since I love to eat. I have so many unique dishes that I make; some tried and true family favorites passed down and some new ones, oldies with a new twist. Some I make up, some I steal from the Internet and add my own flavor. But as long as I am cooking and getting ideas, I never get bored with dinner. The next time I make a delicious meal, I'll be sure to grab my camera. And I'll try to post recipes, in case you want to try and make one of my 'oh so yummy' dishes.
Day 9
And we're still going strong. Not only did Princess put herself on the potty yesterday twice, but she also told me when she had to go to the bathroom as well.
She has managed to stay dry for 2 whole straight days, today being day 3.... although it's not over yet.
My constant questions have now helped her to realize when she has to go. Now she lets me know when it's time for a potty break. Yesterday she got the potty for herself and got on it. Also in the morning, she let me know she had to go and told me to get the potty (and place it strategically in front of the TV so she wouldn't miss her shows... what diva!)
She now runs out to let me or anyone know, that she has to pee pee (which also includes poop) at any given time during the day.
Even while we were at the stores yesterday, she stayed dry the entire time, for a period of a little more than 2 hours. It wasn't until we were eating lunch at a restaurant that she got up and started to declare, very loudly, that she had to go the bathroom... it took a few seconds for me to register that that was what she was actually saying and rushed her to the bathroom, where she peed like a big girl in the big girl toilet.
Even at our play date yesterday afternoon, where I worried she might have an accident, she did not. After asking her a few times if she had to go just to keep the reminder in her head, when she finally answered yes, she used that big girl toilet again, with no fear.
Since she didn't poop the day before, I thought she would go yet another day without pooping, but that night, she finally did number 2.
I think she's gotten it. She's finally 'day time' potty trained!!
We're still going to have to work a bit on the overnight potty training, as she still can't stay dry yet. But At least day time seems to be coming along successfully. I just know now, come Christmas, she might be fully potty trained. I am so happy right now.
